Homosexuality in Egypt
Homosexuality in Egypt might not exactly be the most openly discussed topic. Religiously, Culturally and ‘logically’, it’s just unacceptable.

In many incidents, the word Gay, or in arabic “Shaz” or more colloquially “khawal”, is used to describe feminine males or qualities that do not coincide with male qualities, like cowardice, soft-voice, girly-walk, etc. You all know what I’m talking about.

Egyptians do not really accept transexuality as a concept either, though it could be handled jokingly especially when referring to a woman with manly features (voice, hight, physical features),it is very rarely considered in a case of a man with womanly features...Because in that case, he’s just GAY!

Homophobia is VERY common amongst Egyptian men, who I personally think don’t know anything about Homosexuality or Homophobia in the first place. However, the majority of guys here would express extreme discomfort at the mention of the subject, and would also never fail to express extreme defensiveness and disrespect to another man who might give off the impression that he’s gay. (Lesbians are usually more welcome among the Egyptian male society, but no surprise there!)

In recent years, more men have become more open about their sexual orientation, some of which openly admit that they swing both ways, some come right out and say “I’m Gay”, and some are assumed to be gay due to reasons mentioned above: He’s just not very ‘manly’(whatever that means anyway)so he must be gay!
The one’s who’re straight, don’t fail to mention that as loudly and aggressively as possible, because God forbid there would be any doubt to that, if the topic does come up.

Personally speaking, I do know several homosexuals, some of which are men and some are women. They have friends, they circulate heterosexual groups and lead very normal lives. Technically, come to think of it, in Egypt, homosexuality is easier to live. If you’re not related, not married, and Egyptian, as a hetersexual couple, you really have no where to go. Simple things like getting a day use by a pool at some hotel requires a marriage certificate or the same family name! You can not get an appartment together and you can not move in together. However, two people of the same sex can co-rent appartments, can move in together, can get hotel rooms together, and can park their car somewhere dark without being suspected of fornication!! Thus, same-sex couples and foreign passports are the way to go!

So Imagine my surprise to come across the first Egyptian Independently produced movie that discusses Homosexuality, includes sexual scenes between Egyptian Male actors (although they speak funny) and openly handles concepts such as AIDS & Homosexuality, Homosexual-Intercourse, and the most striking of all, the Egyptian Government & Homosexuality, because, Oh, I forgot to mention, it is against the law to be Gay in Egypt. (Again I’m not sure about Lesbians though!)

[In 2001, on a night that is known as Cairo 52, aboard a floating club called “Queen Boat”, fifty-two men were arrested and charged with “habitual debauchery” and “obscene behaviour”, code names for “being GAY!”. Contempt of Religion was among the charges]

This movie, entitled “Toul Omry” Egyptian for “All My Life”, seems to be a (though in my opinion an extremely poor) break through. If nothing else, the movie tackles a societal taboo and struggles to bring this topic into the light.

You can check out the trailer below:

Toul Omry:
For Rami, all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds, as long as he keeps to himself. But when his longtime lover leaves him to marry a woman and his best friends drift away, he comes face to face with the harsh realities of life as a gay man in Egypt. Against the backdrop of the choreographed crackdown on gay men and the notorious Queen Boat arrests of 2001, he plunges into a world of loveless friendships and spirals downwards to his ultimate downfall.

Sarah does it again. Excellent post, interesting topic, easy to read, cheery open style, chock-a-block with facts and information.

Gotta give it to ya girl, when you write posts, you write POSTS!!!

Funnily enough, there have been several articles in the French press about the treatment of Egyptian gays. Wonder why?

As far as lesbians are concerned, that is a typically hypocritical anti-gay men attitude. Worldwide.

Sure they don’t talk about lesbians!!

Why not?

Because like many men all over the world, they’d just LOVE to get it on with a couple of hot lesbians!!

(But shhhh, not too loud, we don’t TALK about that.....)

Way to go!!

Michael you will never know how much your criticism (positive and negative) fills me with gratitude and pride. Thank you..

Mostly is funny the things the West notices about Egypt, so in two days I’ve learned that France is concerned about Egypt’s treatment of dogs and gays..hmm..
Though a many regular, average citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation are treated like CRAP.

As for the sexual-lesbian fantasy, ya, I honestly tried to get it but I don’t! Lol

LOL!!

”criticism (positive and negative)”

Well sure!!

I mean, why should I be the ONLY one getting compliments on the one hand AND being shot down in flames on the other!

Name of the game....

As I said, I don’t know why, but there have been several articles on the plight of gays in Egypt.

Iran too, but not for the same reasons. In Iran, they hang gays from cranes in public.

You didn’t get it?!!

Oh Sarah, you’re just no FUN!! LOL

”Simple things like getting a day use by a pool at some hotel requires a marriage certificate or the same family name! ”

I didn’t know it was so extreme. In Mexico, times are changing a little bit, but it really depends on the State and Region. Mexico City, our nation’s capital seems to be the most legally accepting and understanding (along with various metropolitan areas, more culture allows more tolerance legally and individually), while, sadly, rural areas (and probably the better part of Mexico) still not only frown against homosexuality, but attack it from all sides.. with the Church and old Latin Machoism being always striking it’s ugly head in more than hateful attempts to denounce homosexuals.

”more culture allows more tolerance legally and individually”.

This little gem, hidden away in a long sentence, is the essence, and the truth, of the debate. Not only the debate on homosexuality, but many others too....

Cool stuff, Oscar.

Actually it could get more extreme than that, it’s known that sometimes Egyptian Police checks out apartments for rent if there’s a doubt that an unmarried couple live there.

You’d think more culture allows more tolerance, but it’s not true, homosexuality might be frowned upon in Egypt and deemed unimaginable, but premarital sexual-relations between a man and a woman isn’t any different.

Holy hell! Are these types of written laws or socially understood ”moral laws”? Do they actually have criminal punishments for law breakers?

I have heard and read in a few articles references to ”moral police” in some countries. Does Egypt use these types of ”police” as well?

Is this everywhere in Egypt or only certain regions?

Moral Police? Hahha, of course Oscar, Moral Police is one of the most active departments in Egyptian Police. They’re constantly after prostitution, fornication, girls and boys caught making out or even just suspected of it (blackmail them with arrest to get bribes), they’re quite EVERYWHERE!
They’re known to be very indecent and can stoop as low as raping the girl in charge.
It’s sadly in most places in Egypt, but less popular in touristic areas and Summer resorts like the North Coast or by the Red Sea.
This ’Moral Police’ is particularly immoral and extremely hated by the general public. They frequent places like night clubs, promiscuous areas and such...

I just realized that sounded like a news Alert for a ’Wanted-Look-Out’ kinda thing. Lol

God knows I’m not in a place to ”throw stones” individually or for my country, but the whole concept of moral police just seems so bizarre, especially after what you just wrote...

Seems as though they are nothing more than paid criminals (kind of like our police.)

Maybe I am even less ”moral” than I thought, but ”nightclubs” in my time were for more for finding a date, mingling, attraction...If the moral police run around in the clubs, ...well what do you do..It seems like the moral police are enforcing a great divide between men and women or any type of attraction.. They seem kind of like ”creepy voyeurs” in swimming pools, clubs, parks, apartments,etc...

I don’t want to say in anyway morals are wrong, but isn’t there worse things happening (murders, rapes, robberies, etc) that police could be investigating besides homosexuals or unmarried couple living together or teens kissing in a park?

You know, my dad tells me that back in the day, the Moral Police would arrest people who pee in the streets...
Today, they wait outside night clubs to pick on drunk teens and enjoy watching them squirm with panic.

I don’t think you’re throwing stones at all, it is a very bizarre concept and it’s very corrupt too...Technically there are very high levels of prostitution in Egypt, though I don’t have solid figures, I read somewhere that Egypt has the second or third highest prostitution levels in AFRICA! I’m sure you know what that means!

Although drugs are under the jurisdiction of another department, they still sometimes link the two together, especially when fishing for a bribe. If you’re interested, I recommend you watch one of Youssef Chahin’s most recent movies called ’Heya Fawda?’, A.K.A Le Chaos and Chaos.
It has a more or less accurate depiction of much of the corruption within the Egyptian Police Force, and ESP. the Moral Police.
Unfortunately I’m unable to find a trailer with English Subtitles, but it’s definitely available on DVD.
